The modern rock scene is not short of musicians out to revive the music of
the past. Few, however, are willing to go quite so far back as the 11th
Century. Few, that is, but London’s Circulus. Formed over a decade hence,
this seven-strong band of psychedelic medieval rockers take up lute,
mandolin, Moog and harmonium for a suite of serene folk-rock epics and
cider-glugging Village fayre jigs. Out on the road to promote their new
wares in the shape of their debut album ‘The Lick On The Tip Of An Envelope
Yet To Be Sent’ (out now on Rise Above) this show will mark their first
appearance on a Welsh stage.

Support on the night comes courtesy of local progressive rock veterans
Rocket Goldstar, back after a hiatus that saw frontman Gaz Williams record a
song with Charlotte Church and bassist Frank Naughton make an album with
Cardiff street celeb Ninjah! Tickets retail for £7.50, and are available

forecast & in the pines present mi and l'au, sunday 4th september at the millers tavern in riverside.

after collaborating successfully back in may on the memorable marissa nadler and andrew hockey show, we at in the pines are happy to let y'all know that the wonderful mi & l'au will be appearing at the millers this sunday night.

mi & l'au played a mesmerising performance 2 weeks ago at the green man festival. Their music is bare, made with simple instrumentation - voice, acoustic guitars, and other very sparse orchestrations. They have a quite passion that is expressed both in the way they are as human beings and in their songs. The music is austere, but simultaneously warm.

Mi and L'au met in Paris a few years back. Mi is Finnish and was working as a model to make ends meet and L'au (who's French) was working in the music industry (soundtracks, I think). They fell deeply and immediately in love, and after a short period of moving from apartment to apartment in Paris, they gave everything up and decided to move to the woods in Finland, so they could be alone together in peace and to spend their time discovering each other and their music. They live in a small cabin in complete isolation and they spend virtually all their time making music together in solitude.

door charge is around £3, and we expect to open the doors around 7pm. our last collaboration sold out super-early, so be warned....expect lovely music from mi & l'au, and the superstar in the pines dj's...

the green man festival

hey hey...

i know, it's been ages since we've updated our bloggity blog, but really...our excuses are good. i was away on tour with the blues explosion again, and then i spent three weeks in the netherlands working at a centre for asylum seekers. jon has been a mentalist with his band shooting at unarmed men.

and we just spent the most awesome 4 1/2 days working for the fabulous jo&danny at the green man festival in hay-on-wye...it was an awesome weekend, with many highlights. i am sure many of you pinesters were there...so i won't go on.

two of the highlights are to be appearing at in the pines in the next few months as well!! after the success of the marissa nadler show, the folks at FORECAST are bringing us another wonderful act in the form of MI & L'AU...i caught a few songs of there's in between selling t-shirts on saturday, and i cannot wait to see them in an intimate setting...which happens to be at the next IN THE PINES....SUNDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER @ THE MILLERS TAVERN, RIVERSIDE...check out www.weareforecast.com for more info...

also, after having to can last month's planned show, we are happy to let y'all know that the fabulous ANDREW HOCKEY will be playing in the pines on SUNDAY 16TH OCTOBER. he was also incredible on the weekend, and i have fallen in love with the 10" vinyl EP he has just released on slow graffiti records...it is likely that Andrew will be joined by aussie Darren Hanlon...a multi-talented musician who has over the past few years toured with the likes of Ladybug Transistor, Magnetic Fields & Evan Dando...Darren plays the banjo, and last year recorded an album in Tuscon, Arizona...

also...we plan to continue the REQUEST A COUNTRY CLASSIC tradition, so let us know what you want to hear & we'll do our darndest...

pines update

Wow…it’s been ages since we’ve added anything here, and yee-hah, have we been busy! We’re coming up to our 7th IN THE PINES this Sunday night … in mellow “back to basics” stylee, after two sell-out shows in the past month.

May 23rd saw the very excellent anti-folk hero LACH from New York City rock the house with his dry wit, engaging sense of humour and incredibly catchy and entertaining toons. Drawing on what he sees around him, Lach has a great time with some of the more grizzled & sizzled Millers Tavern locals…all in all a brilliant night and a great success for our first international artist! We hope to have him back again one day soon…

Next up, only a few weeks later, MARISSA NADLER packed the Millers to the rafters, and wooed us all with her beautiful strain of folk music. Support came from the once local, now Cornwall-based ANDREW HOCKEY who also mesmerised the usually rather-rowdy Millers crowed with his Nick Drake-esque folk. We felt honoured to have them both along, and want to thank the folks at FORECAST (www.weareforecast.com) who organised Marissa’s whole tour.

That’s update from the pines…. this Sunday night (3rd July) we have a BACK TO BASICS REQUEST A COUNTRY CLASSIC SPECIAL … just tell us what you want to hear, and we’ll do our best to play it for you.

Oh – we saw William Elliott Whitmore at the Barfly last night. One guy, lots of tattoos, a straw hat, a banjo and an awesome bluegrass storytelling vibe. Deeeelicious.

we just got back from 3 glorious days in st davids, westest wales. man, it was awesome! we stayed in an almost deserted caravan park, high up on the edge of a cliff & walked almost 20 miles of the pembrokeshire coastal path.
johnny cash went down a treat as we sipped an amazingingly smooth lebanese red wine (seriously) & the wind howled outside the van, a stray cat (nick-named foxy schulenberg) curled up in front of our gas fire.
i took about 50 photos of lambs & cows. you can take the girl out of the city, but....

....thank god i'm a country(ish) girl!

Thanks & praise be to everyone who came down to The Millers Tavern last night for the third night of IN THE PINES. It was a fun & eclectic evening, ending off a triumphant Cardiff weekend.

Special kudos goes to Jemma & Ed who were most excellent guest DJ's ... nice touches with neko case & leonard nimoy guys. And shout outs also go to Chapple, who played a too-short set of Low, Johnny Cash & Carter Family songs. Noice.

- and we say YES to the new Millers house ale - "Ffoccin Ale" went down a treat.

hey pine-sters!!

you know, i ain't no dummy, but i feel extremely techno-challenged when it comes to this bloggy business ... cannot for the life of me seem to upload any photo's ... and we have some awesome pix of the first two in the pines. apologies too for the multiple listings of this .. cache-ing problems...!!

who went to the coachwhips gig at dempseys last sunday night then? m-m-mental. but good times, well done all.

pines number three is coming up next sunday march 20, at the millers tavern in riverside. you knows where its at. it's all excitement this time around - more guest dj's and for the first time, live country(ish) music.

chapple & alexander are gonna play some country-type moosic, some choice johnny cash tunes amongst em. guest dj's are all class - both miss jemma & mister ed have impeccible taste in music and will fill your hearts and mind with love! ;)

bought myself the STEVE TURNER & HIS BAD IDEAS album today ... the mudhoney bloke has turned out a very cool country/rock/folk thang, with special appearances from holly golightly. gonna play it heaps at the next pines. as well as the BLANCHE album 'if we can't trust the doctor' - well & truly treasured by myself and sorely missed after i left it in a rental car in washington state. saw 'em play last year at pukkelpop festival before mclusky - they rocked. in this stylish, dark, carter family way. encores at a festival and all. and some UNCLE TUPELO - for old times sake.

the millers have turned out a house ale called FFOCCIN ALE .. a bargain at less that 2 squid a pint. and i meant to tell y'all that house bourbon is on special at only one pound seventy five a double. pity i ain't got the stomach for bourbon...
